Emotional Freedom Techniques

What is EFT?

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques. It is also known as tapping and was created by Gary Craig out of a technique called Thought Field Therapy.

EFT works from the premise that all negative emotions are caused by a disturbance in the body’s energy system. If you address those disturbances whilst focusing on a problem or issue then the emotional upset will dissipate.

How does EFT work?

EFT works by gently tapping on specific points within the meridian system, which is a network of energy flowing through the body. The meridian system has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years and is used in acupuncture. Actually, EFT has been likened to acupuncture without needles. Gentle tapping on specific points known as acupoints helps release blocked energy. Along with the tapping the problem or issue is focused upon. This combination allows the body to move towards balancing it’s energy system and negative emotions are released.

According to Dawson Church “ acupoint tapping sends signals directly to the stress centres of the mid brain, not mediated by the frontal lobes (the thinking part, active in talk therapy)”. Tapping is believed to access the amygdala part of your brain, which is responsible for emotions, survival, instincts and memory and is responsible for the stress response. This response can significantly influence and even cause problems for you when in overdrive as so many of us experience in our lives today.

What EFT can be used to help with

EFT has been used on physiological, and psychological issues. Tapping can be used on so many different things. Including weight loss, eating problems, pain relief, PTSD, anxiety, depression addictions phobias self esteem, self confidence, autoimmune diseases, grief, relationships, insomnia, exam worries the list could go on and on. As the founder of EFT Gary Craig says “try it on everything.

What you can expect in an EFT session

The session will usually last for about an hour although the first session is usually for an hour and a half. After a brief chat about the problem you will be shown the tapping sequence. We will then begin to explore your issue in a little more depth by tapping and talking and following EFT protocols. Obviously each session will be different but the main focus will be on using the tapping to move towards relieving you of the problem and gaining a greater understanding of where it originated. The session is conducted whilst seated. It is also worth mentioning that if you do not wish to disclose the problem to me we can work together in what I call the dark, which means we can work on your problem without you even having to tell me about it.

EFT is very easy to learn and to apply to you. For the simpler issues in your life it can have a positive impact very quickly. For more complex issues it is important to work with a qualified practitioner.
